I am in the process of learning to invest in stocks. I have a basic strategy I plan to research and follow.
I am having trouble gathering all of the data I need to determine the quality of a stock. I hope all the info I need can be obtained using google finance, or yahoo finance.

I need all of the numbers on this sheet. I cant seem to find sales/shares, cash flow/shares, and a few others.
Do I need to calculate these myself?

I’m looking at your worksheet and there are some very important ratios and figures on there… Great place to start but not as simple as just crunching numbers.

Most of your figures can be found on MSN money or Yahoo finance. Look under key statistics and you can find many of these figures.

Just some quick advice – Stats don’t make up the whole picture:

The most important thing you need to know before investing is what sectors are in favor and what stocks within those sectors are in favor:
Keep in mind that a lot of large investment firms and hedge funds have much better access to information that you do and also have access to major companies key personnel. This means that the institutional investors – IE Hedge Funds, Pension Funds, Large Mutual Funds, Investment Banks etc… know everything on yahoo finance and a lot more long before you do and have a much better idea how to interpret it.

Do not try and trade agaianst the big guys. Your 100 shares don’t move a stock’s price but if Goldman Sachs dumps 100,000 shares of some company the market will notice. Also key is that investment banks tend to rotate out of sectors in unison – IE when the rally started, all the investment firms and life co’s etc.. got out of defensive stocks (such as consumer staples or healthcare) and rotated into higher risk stocks such as energy and commodities. Don’t fight sector rotation, just go with it and you’ll be glad you did.

Not to say fundamental analysis isn’t important – it’s crucial. But you don’t need to know every ratio. Look for several key things:

Low Debt, especially short term debt and the amount of long term debt coming due. Debt ratios are all available – make sure its manageable with lots of breathing room
Cash – Credit markets and equity markets are loosening but nowhere near normal. Make sure your company has ample cash on hand to weather any future potential storms.
Free Cash Flow – Learn how to analyze this statement. This is the lifeblood of the company and crucial to understand. A company without sufficient cash flow can grow all it wants but will die without managing this properly.
Sales Growth – Excluding the past year and a half – 2 years (especially post Lehman) regular sales growth is important. Make sure it isn’t engineered through hacking and slashing the business and is true growth in revenues.

So you have a wine cellar, or are seriously thinking about getting one. You want to know, can software help me manage it? The answer is a resounding yes. Yes, if your cellar is really just a couple of wine racks, not necessarily in the basement. And yes, yes when you own a multi-thousand bottle operation designed as much to drive your friends and neighbors wild with envy as to classify and protect your collection. Yes, wine cellar software can help you manage and protect your collection. But you must spend some serious time and effort determining which wine cellar software best meets your needs, much as you spend time and effort selecting your wine.

Before proposing our ideas on what to look for in wine cellar software, a few general comments are in order. We are not going to name names. We are not interested in providing publicity for any wine cellar software. As always, make sure that you can return the software within a reasonable period, often 30 days, for a full refund or a full refund minus a small handling fee. Recently we were interested in some software that had nothing to do with cellars.

The manufacturer offered NO money-back guarantee but did allow us to download a free trial version. This version lasted only three days and many of its potentially interesting features were disabled. I would never buy such software and strongly recommend that you don’t either. Remember, promised features are meaningless until you check them out. No vendors ever tell you about their software’s shortcomings. Have you ever heard of software that wasn’t touted as easy to use?

Data entry is a major aspect of software suitability for you. If you are going to be typing away, you may lose interest rapidly. Some programs insist that you enter basic information such as the grape variety, brand, country, region, and vintage. Great, how do they handle a multitude of grape varieties such as often found in red Bordeaux wines? Many wines have two “brands” associated with them. If you’re enough of a wine connoisseur to have a wine cellar, you may be interested in such details. Whether you are interested enough to bash in all that extra information is up to you. Some wine, such as most Champagnes, doesn’t have a vintage.

Will the system force you to make up a value? It’s so easy not to enter the optional data but then system’s value drops off exponentially. For example, suppose that your database doesn’t include the vintage of your Chateau Petrus. The software won’t be able to provide a best date to drink date.

There are other issues involved with data entry. How does the system handle multiple purchases? In other words, you liked such and such a Barolo that you ended up buying a case, lucky you. Does the program let you add only changed data such as the price, or do you have to start virtually from zero? Some systems allow you to enter data from the bar code. While this option is useful, you may require data not found on the bar code. So expect to spend time and effort bashing in the data. You have probably heard the phrase, Garbage In Garbage Out. A good system flags outrageous data entry values but cannot catch all your errors.

If you are wealthy enough to have a fine wine cellar, you may consider paying someone to do serious data entry for you. Just make sure that his or her nickname isn’t Butterfingers.

Mass Email Marketing: When Should You Send Your Mail?

The response you get from your mass email campaign will vary greatly depending on what time you send out your message.  For this reason, knowing when to send mail is critically important to its Success.  So just how do you figure out the right time?  When factoring in the extended weekend and the hangover that typically accompanies it, you may determine that your open rates should be considerably higher from Tuesday to Thursday.  However, there is no one right time as every mass email campaign is different and every subscriber has different preferences.  

Give Your Campaign Special Attention

Before launching your mass email campaign, you should sit back and think about what would be the best time for your subscribers to receive your message.  While statistics and experts can give you an ideal, this time all depends on your audience.  The right time for one marketer may not be suitable for the next, and the same especially holds true when it comes to recipients.  The nature of your business should also play a role in coming up with an optimal time.  Remember, you are trying to maximize open rates and conversions for your marketing initiatives, not someone else’s.  

Business to Business Marketing

If you are using mass email to market to other businesses, you may decide that it is best to implement a different schedule for mailing these contacts. You can definitely rule out Saturdays and Sundays because most professionals work so hard during the week, that they do not even want to see an inbox over the weekend.  As far as time goes, you should be able to catch most of these contacts during normal business hours.  Think right after lunch and an hour or two before the end of the day.  If you are targeting business professionals in the U.S., 12:00 to 4:00 PM EST is probably the best time to send email, and actually get them to read your message.  

Consider Your Content and Marketing Message

You can also determine the right time to send out your mass email campaign based on the content.  For example, if you are marketing a newsletter or regular news updates, you definitely want to make sure your mail is delivered promptly on a set schedule whether it’s nine in the morning, or eight in the evening.  You tend to have a little more flexibility with sales and promotional emails as they will maintain their relevance considerably longer than news content.  In this instance, determining a good frequency is just as important as figuring out the right time to send.  

Get a Good Start

We have already established the fact that every mass email campaign is different.  However, all marketers can better determine when to send by examining the demographics information obtained at sign up.  Take note of what day, and what time of day subscribers signed up as this could give you some valuable insight.  Other than that, a lot of coming up with the best time is a process of trial and error.  Just keep studying your market and you will eventually put it all together.
