The Pros and Cons of Buying a Franchise Straight Out of College

In today’s rapidly changing economy, college graduates realize that embarking on a steady career that will last many years with one company is a reality of the past. More likely than not, college graduates will change jobs multiple times over the course of their professional lives, and job security will be something they only dream of. As a result, more and more young men and women entering the workforce are exploring options outside of the traditional 9-5 job. For the entrepreneurial thinker, buying a franchise will rank high on this list of possibilities. Yet, despite the inarguable Success of numerous franchises and countless franchise owners across the country and around the world, is venturing into the franchise business the right choice for a recent college graduate?

Persuasive cases exist on both sides of the issue, and in order for each individual to make the best personal decision on whether to pursue a franchise opportunity, he or she should take time to evaluate several factors involved in franchise business opportunities. The following are several pros and cons of making the college-to-franchise transition.

The Pros

1) No Experience?… No Problem

Because franchises succeed based on a proven system of operation, capitalizing on franchise opportunities requires little to no previous experience. Rather, established franchises provide the tools necessary to make your business profitable, including training manuals, Marketing and PR, and full support for your endeavor. Consider, for example, any popular restaurant franchise. The franchise owner does not need to spend time or energy on advertising and marketing, as the parent corporation ensures the development and implementation of Marketing Strategies. In the same way, the franchise owner does not need to research best business practices to determine how to operate his or her particular store. He or she needs only to follow the tried and true pattern of operation that is already in place.

2) Early Independence with Less Risk

Few things are more gratifying than building a business in which you work for yourself and are able to see and keep the fruits of your labor. With interest in entrepreneurship increasingly on the rise, more and more young professionals are looking for ways to generate an income and create a lifestyle while working for themselves. Because of the systems of success already in place with franchise business opportunities, young Entrepreneurs can minimize business start-up risks while maximizing their potential for success.

3) Organizational Support

Today’s young business owners are not alone in navigating the at-times-rough waters of entrepreneurship. Organizations such as the Small Business Administration in the United States and the Young Entrepreneurs Association in Canada provide useful information, tools, and resources to help business owners on the path to success.

As positive as the pros are, however, as with any decision, it is equally important to weigh the cons. When determining whether a business franchise is right for you, consider the following.

The Cons

1) Leadership Skills

As a recent college graduate, you may have extensive by-the-book business knowledge and be able to foresee assets and liabilities without a blink of the eye. But many franchise opportunities also require the ability to lead a staff of people. It is important to ask yourself if you know the principles of hiring and firing, and if you are comfortable managing people even if difficult and stressful situations. Some experts recommend that before you step into the role of employer, you might benefit from first spending some time as an employee, particularly in the franchise industry which you are planning to pursue.

2) Financial Capabilities

Even when it pays off in the long run, up-front franchise financing can be a costly endeavor, and it is not uncommon for franchises to take at least a year or longer to break even. In fact, it is uncommon for them not to. Do you have the resources to fund your franchise venture while still being able to provide for your basic needs such as food and shelter? And, are you willing to stick with your franchise even through any early difficult days and see it through to the profitable days ahead?

3) Industry Interest

As with any business endeavor, to become Successful in a franchise business opportunity, you must be committed to persevering for the long haul. Have you done enough research to ensure as much as possible that the franchise you have chosen is one that you will be able to enthusiastically devote yourself to for several years to come? Are you letting your passion dictate the franchise you choose, or are franchise opportunities dictating your passion? To be successful, be sure that it is the former and never the latter.

The franchising market is strong and growing larger by the day. From 2004 to 2005 along, there was an 11% increase in the number of franchise units! Given the incredible growth of this industry, it is natural that it will remain a serious consideration for any young college graduates seeking to reap the benefits of free enterprise. And with the many types of business available, franchise opportunities offer numerous industries to fit with individual interests and talents. Honestly considering the above pros and cons will help you in your decision on whether starting a franchise business straight out of college is right for you.

The main ingredient to a product launch is, well,… a product. You can’t expect to bake bread if you don’t have flour. You need all the other ingredients and prep work too, but without the flower, you’re just not going to bake bread. You can try the recipe without salt, or yeast, and you’ll still get something that might resemble bread. It might not be as tasty, or as fluffy as bread, but you will get something out of it. Without the flour however, you have nothing at all. This is what a product launch is all about, having a new product enter the market with a lot of buzz and a massive amount of leveraged promotion. The buzz and promotion are the Marketing system, and though the product creation does involve pulling from some components of the marketing system for it’s creation, actually creating the product is it’s own process which must be completed in order to have a launch. Product creation is often seen as a bulky time consuming process, but with the right combination of methods and strategies, it can be done quickly and efficiently.

The seed launch is designed to find the market and the problems for which they desperately need solutions to, so that you can create the exact product that people will want to buy. This is also a major part of the Marketing Strategy, as it’s at this stage that you start to build relationships with your prospects and eventually position yourself as the great hope of their solution. It’s during this seed launch that you begin to learn how to create your product, what it should be about.

One popular method of product creation is to align yourself with other experts in the field and request interviews with them. This is a form of the Joint Venture, where two partners contribute to the creation of a product and cross promote it, as well as their own respective ‘flagship’ products, to each other’s list. Often, the interviewer will grant full rights of the interview to the interviewee, so that the expert may sell or use the product for their own business advancement, and the interviewer will include this interview with the product he or she is creating.

Another product creation method is to use existing material, such as Private Label Rights materials, and rewrite and repurpose it. Rewriting is pretty easy if you did a proper seed launch to discover the most pressing problems, and kept track of solutions that were suggested, and the ones that worked for others. You can even include the interview method with this method. Repurposing this Private Label Content has it’s own set of strategies, but one of the most popular ones is to convert them into different formats. For example, you can turn an e-book into a video and/or audio book, which not only changes the format, it also creates a higher perceived value and can serve to reach a larger target market than one format alone.

As well as a number of other methods and strategies, you can also create the product yourself, or outsource the creation of a product. This proposition will involve the most amount of time and money, and if you choose to outsource it, the highest amount of risk. Using product creation methods and strategies can minimize that risk, and give you leverage.

A very important part of creating a product is in making sure that it has several formats for delivery, ensuring that it will be desired by the largest number of prospects. Resell rights products can be incorporated to easily produce text, audio, and video formats to achieve this goal and lessen the amount of strain placed on your own time and resources. The other part of creating a product is how you structure the product so that it will appeal to as many people as possible. Some of these tips are preparing written documents for reading, videos for watching, audios for listening. Providing an interactive experience for the customer through the launch process, and delivering small bits of these strategies is what will make the launch Successful.

To get your business website or blog found by your potential prospects you must have “top rankings” and be on the starting page of search engine results on the major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.  It’s only because of the search engines that your site or blog will be seen by potential web surfers.

What links the frustrations of daily life, like VCR clocks and voicemail systems, to airplane crashes and a staggering hidden epidemic of medical error? Kim Vicente is a professor of human factors engineering at the University of Toronto and a consultant to NASA, Microsoft, Nortel Networks and many other organizations; he might also be described as a technological anthropologist. He spends his time in emergency rooms, airplane cockpits and nuclear power station control rooms — as well as in kitchens, garages and bathrooms — observing how people interact with technology. In the first chapter of The Human Factor, Kim Vicente sets out the disturbing pattern he’s observed: from daily life to life-or-death situations, people are using technology that doesn’t take the human factor into account. Technologies as diverse as stove tops, hospital work schedules and airline cockpit controls lead to ‘human error’ because they neglect what people are like physically, psychologically, and in more complex ways. The results range from inconvenience to tragic loss of life. How has this situation come about? The root cause of the problem, Vicente explains in the second chapter, is a two cultures issue. There is a divide in the world of technological design — just as there is in the world more generally — between humanistic and mechanistic world-views. The humanistic view (in, say, cognitive psychology) deals with people in the abstract, ignoring that using tools is an integral human activity. The mechanistic view, on the other hand, forgets that it is real people who have to use the tools engineers develop. The two groups aren’t talking to each other: as the author puts it, ourtraditional ways of thinking have ignored — and virtually made invisible — the relationship between people and technology. As is often the case in human factors engineering, the solution is both revolutionary and, on the surface, simple: what we have to do is focus on the relationship between people and technology. Taking a cue from systems thinking, Kim Vicente argues that we should focus not just on better products or better practices, but the fit between them. What this means is not the development of more high-tech or low-tech articles, but a Human-tech revolution, where the human comes before the technological but the two are always linked. In some areas the revolution is already at work: it’s not always the case that technology doesn’t take the human factor into account. When it does, as in the case of the Reach toothbrush, the Palm Pilot, or the critical incident reporting method developed at the Philadelphia Children’s hospital, the technology is a success. Over the past several years, I’ve seen the following happen in a number of communities: a new business opens up, complete with ribbon cutting, signage, the whole nine yards. Usually, they fill some market opportunity or supply shortage in the area (other times, they’re completely redundant, but that’s another issue). Seems like they should make a go of it, but pretty soon, they’re among the 1 in 3 businesses that fail by their second year, and if they’re lucky, they’re not among the half of businesses that fail by year four.

Of course, there are many reasons small business goes under: bad market analysis, bad management, more dreaming than doing, or whatever. But one trend I’ve noticed, in both the long-standing Successful Businesses and the blossoming newcomers, is the level of community involvement of the business and business owner.

Many businesses overlook a philanthropic Marketing approach-sponsoring community events or programs, being a volunteer in the local schools, or belonging to area civic organizations. It’s not hard to understand why-the rigors of running a business, a traditional mindset towards marketing (advertising), and a focus on the bottom line can be distracting and overwhelming. Amazingly though, tapping into a vein of community goodwill really consists of only two activities: 1) being a public figure in the community, and 2) leveraging your business as a community benefactor.

If your customers are only entries on a spreadsheet, then they’re going to feel it and be less likely to refer your business to their friends, family and neighbors. Make a point to converse with your customers; even basic small talk begins to build a relationship, which your customers can use as the foundation of your “word of mouth” campaign. Most of all make sure they know your name, so that your business has a real person behind it all.

The flip side of this occurs on the other side of the counter. Business is a lot of work, during open hours as well as before and after. It’s critical to be active in some aspect of the community outside of business hours, whether it’s your kids’ schools, a local civic organization or in a place of worship. When people see you outside of the shop, it’s another opportunity to build relationships and show that you’re more than your business’ bottom line.

Whether you sell widgets, fix doo-dads, or give knick-knack advice, you want to get you and your business name to be well-known throughout your community. Marketing 101, right? Well, many businesses overlook some of the most cost-effective ways of marketing and promoting their businesses-sponsorships. In most of the business plans I’ve seen, the marketing section consists of a budget for advertising placement, signage and collateral marketing materials. Rarely do I see a section for philanthropic contributions or sponsorships as a means of Business Marketing, and this is a severely overlooked opportunity.

Local organizations and non-profits are always seeking money for their events and programs, especially in this economic downturn. The lack of funds creates the opportunity for generous sponsorship packages, driven by increased desperation for funds. Although sponsorship opportunity prices vary by event/program, chances are there is an option for any budget, and the benefits nearly always surpass the cost. Consider a business that sponsors a team in the local sports league-how many parents and community members go, eyes like lasers on their kids, whose team is sponsored by the local widget seller with its name plastered on the shirt or jersey? If the league also does its job, the parents are well reminded that their kids’ opportunity to play is because of your generous sponsorship. Compare that to the impact of a quarter-page newspaper ad.

Here are some great ways to get involved and have you and your business seen in your community:

1) Join your local Chamber of Commerce and attend networking events

2) Be a sponsor of a local festival or event, and volunteer to work or chair a committee

3) Sponsor local youth sports leagues or teams, or advertise with local athletic booster clubs

4) Join at least one civic or social organization

5) Participate or volunteer for local Junior Achievement programs

6) Purchase or volunteer for a segment of an “Adopt a Road” program

7) Underwrite or support local arts or cultural activities

8) Sponsor a team, or start your own, in a local road race (screen printing your business name on jerseys is cheap, no matter how well any of your runners do)

9) Get in the local parade with a float or other entry and throw really, really good candy to the crowds (if permitted)

10) Offer in-kind services to charities, programs, etc. that capitalize on your skills, talents or business areas

It’s important to remember that the greater purpose of philanthropic marketing is the philanthropy, and that any commercial benefits to your business are secondary and indirect. It’s also important to remember that philanthropic marketing won’t overcome a lack of hard work or inability to do proper accounting. But being an anchor in your community, as a business and personally, might be the difference between a sleepy storefront and a centennial business.
